Wood Staining Basics
Wood finishing usually includes staining the wood in some way. There are five main reasons why you should apply some sort of stain to wood.
1. The color harmony of the woodwork with the furnishings of a home requires staining. This is because wood in its natural tones on furniture from tables and chairs to end tables and wood fireplace inserts does not usually harmonize well with textiles and the colors of the walls. Changing a garish, unpleasant color to a softer more attractive one that will take a place in a color scheme is an important reason for staining.
2. You can often obtain greater beauty in a particular article by applying stain. Sometimes you can achieve this by changing an inferior or cheap wood to make it look like an expensive, beautiful one, such as imitation mahogany finish on birch through staining.
The coloring obtained through the stain may bring out unsuspected qualities and beauty in the wood itself, by accentuating contrasts and bringing before the eye attractive natural characteristics which are not emphasized in the unstained material.
The reaction of the stain upon flakes or cells of the medullary rays, its effect upon the mass of wood fibers, and its greater absorption by the open pores or broken cell cavities, are all elements of great surprise that are very interesting and vary with different kinds of wood.
3. Staining often tones down natural wood colors that are displeasing to the eye. Sometimes only one part of a rail needs to be changed in color, such as in staining a streak or edge of sapwood to match the general color of the rest of the wooden bar rails
4. Sometimes you may resort to staining as a way of giving new wood an aged effect, as in weathered oak.
5. You can get greater durability in the wood, when it has been or will be exposed to the elements of the weather by the use of preservative stains made with creosote oil. No other finish is applied over creosote-stains. Oil-stains, if they contain certain quantities of drying-oils such as linseed-oil, will protect or preserve wood through the varnishlike film which is left as a covering after the oil has dried.
What is wood staining?
Wood finishers are beginning to give a very definite and narrow meaning to the word "staining," and, at present, generally exclude all materials that add an opaque pigment to the surface, calling
such coatings, which remain largely or partly upon or outside the surface, paints, lacquers, or enamels.
With this exclusion in mind, staining is a changing of hue or tone which is due to a chemical reaction or to the application of a liquid that enters to some extent into the interior, and with coloring matter changes the color of a layer of wood near the surface of the portico, ornamental pediment, or wood surface while still allowing the grain with its different cell arrangements to be seen clearly.
Staining should leave a transparent effect instead of obscuring the surface with opaque material such as pigments. The coloring-matter in stains should be in a thoroughly dissolved condition, instead of being in a turbid muddy paste, when it is applied to the wood.

Design Tips For Your Outdoor Deck Rails
You may have just purchased a new home but the backyard is quite bare. You are now thinking of ways to enhance the area to make it attractive and a great place where you can hold small gatherings for family and friends. How about adding a garden patio with an elevated deck?
Picture your patio with lots of flowers and wonderful plants big and small. And then add to that a wooden deck which is a bit elevated for a fantastic effect. Does that give you a feeling of joy and excitement? It should because of the beauty you can achieve in your backyard with this idea.
Your deck project should not cost you much especially if you want to go hands on in constructing it. You may need to consult a professional designer first to determine the proper measurements for your deck appropriate for your available space outdoors. After that, you can start listing your materials and then order them.
For the deck, you will need decking boards which you can place in the pattern of your choice. If it's an elevated one that you want, a strong and solid base and frame are essential. The decking boards will have to be laid straight and firm to make a sturdy deck.
You have to remember though that a deck would not be complete without a railing. A deck railing will ensure the safety of the area especially when there are small kids around. It will also prevent falls notably when the deck you have is elevated from the ground. Be sure to check your local building codes to guide and help you build a compliant deck railing.
In making your deck railing, you have various options not only in terms of materials but as well as in the sizes. For the top rails, you have a choice between using the 2x4 or 2x6 wood. Both can be installed horizontally or vertically. It can also have a slight slope to allow water to shed easily and prevent rotting.
For the posts, you can have them protrude at corners or at the end only. Another option is to have protruding posts at each railing section for a different look or at you can alternate them. It all depends on your preference.
Moving to the bottom rails, typically the 2x4 size is used. But you may need to bevel the edges a bit to let water flow easily and not stay on the flat surface.
In between the top and bottom rails are the so-called balusters or pickets which normally use the 2x2s. These can actually be screwed directly to the deck without using a bottom rail. Balusters and posts are available in different designs such as the colonial, twisted, tapered, plain, square and Victorian.
A wooden deck provides a classic look but you have to know that you can combine it with other materials such as a glass or metal deck railing for a more wonderful effect. Again, it will all depend on what style you like for your garden patio.

Wooden Kitchen Bar Stools
Whether your kitchen has been newly remodeled or you want to replace worn out kitchen chairs, the addition of a wooden kitchen bar stool will transform your boring kitchen into a pleasing room with elegant seating crafted from rich, natural wood. Many of these designs are a combination of highly polished wood and fabric or leather upholstery. Ranging in styles from traditional to contemporary, wooden stools for the kitchen are available in swivel or non-swivel styles, and high back or backless models. Wood stools can also be purchased in stylish designs with or without arms.
Often called a breakfast bar stool, they are usually found in classic brown or basic black. To complement different decors and personal tastes, wooden kitchen stools are manufactured in soft pastel colors, as well as colors that are bold and bright. Kitchen stools are made from a variety of popular woods including Oak, Mahogany, Ash, and Cherry. Another widely used wood for making stools is Pine. Soft and easy to carve, Pine is economical and readily available. Many premium quality wooden stools feature hand carved designs, self-returning swivels connected to strong frames, and a comfortable metal encased foot rail.
Wooden stools for the kitchen are ideal to use in corner nooks, under a kitchen window sill, or to add an overall look of distinctive elegance and style. The price for a wooden kitchen stool will range from moderate to expensive. Factory made kitchen stools are the most practical, but many times customers will prefer to have them customized to match specific colors or intricate patterns that highlight the kitchen. When you are ready to compare different designs and models, you should look for kitchen bar stools that are built with quality construction from sturdy and durable wood. If they are combined with upholstery, check for any loose or hanging threads, and material that may be cracked, bulged, or torn. All hardware should be securely attached, and the stool should have an adequate seating pad. Bar stools with high backs need sufficient padding along with good back support, and they should stand level on all sides.

Discover the Best of Sydney's Architecture
The capital of New South Wales and often confused as the capital of Australia, Sydney is one of the most exciting, vibrant cities to visit in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you are visiting Sydney to explore its cultural history or to relax at some of the city's trendy bar and nightclubs, one thing's for sure, you'll be spoiled for choice. Thankfully, there are a few locations which stand out as 'must see' locations, making choosing that little bit easier.
One of the most popular locations for tourists to visit in Sydney is the famous Sydney Opera House. Located at Sydney Harbour at Bennelong Point, Sydney Harbours is one of the most prominent and probably well-known architectural landmarks in Sydney and one that always features highly on everyone's to-do list.
The Opera house was designed and - for the most part - constructed by Jørn Utzon, a Danish architect, who in 2003 received the Pritzker Prize for his work, architecture's highest honour. Since then the Opera House has been made into a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is commonly regarded as one of the most distinctive and memorable buildings to visit on a trip to Sydney.
Another architectural masterpiece which attracts thousands of tourists every year is Sydney Harbour Bridge. The famous steel arch carries rail, vehicular and pedestrian traffic across Sydney harbour, serving as a popular commuting line between the North Shore and Sydney Central Business District.
Sydney Harbour Bridge - particularly when viewed alongside Sydney Opera House - creates the iconic image that most first time visitors are familiar with and often seek out on their first few days in Sydney.
While it's difficult to ever grow tired of Sydney's amazing architecture it can be nice to combine this with another activity which Sydney is famous for - shopping. One of the best places to combine these activities is in The Queen Victoria Building.
The Queen Victoria Building is a world-famous shopping centre that was opened in 1898 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Unfortunately, the building fell into disrepair and was neglected until the early 1980s when a major restoration project began.
Today, the Queen Victoria Building has been restored to its former glory and is a popular destination for both shoppers and historians, all looking to escape the hot streets and partake in a little retail therapy at this landmark store.
Of course, these are just some of Sydney's most famous architectural landmarks and the city has many more for the keen tourist. Deciding which places to visit first can be a tiring experience and something that is best left for filling the time on your A380 flights to Sydney freeing up the rest of your holiday to relax and enjoy the best of what Sydney has to offer.

How to Add Comfort to Your Bar
A bar by itself is a nice addition to any home or even a restaurant. It's a great space where you can display your wines and goblets and enjoy sipping your favorite drinks in the company of loved ones.
Assuming that you have already put up a bar in your home, what else is there to add? Have you thought about the comfort aspect? You may have achieved your beautiful dream bar but will the people who use it feel comfortable while they're there?
If you haven't thought about it, here's a hint. You can add fixtures to your bar that will provide comfort to the hands and feet. These are the hand and foot rails.
These useful rails are tubing where you rest your hands and feet while seated or standing at the bar. They are attached to the bar itself and in fact, they can even improve the beauty of your home bar. With the rails, you are creating a more functional bar.
There are various materials available on the market today but the more your bar will shine if you use the brass tubing. This particular material is very attractive because of its gold like color. It looks and glows like gold indeed. When properly maintained, you can rest assure that your bar will always look good for a long time.
Before you think that it might cost you a lot to use the brass tubing, it actually is inexpensive to install one to your dream bar. You can save even more if you take the time to install it yourself by following instructions.
A brass tubing can be bought in 12-inch sections. So if you need only 10 feet, you should get this length and just cut it at home. Or another option is to have it customized according to your exact specifications to save you time.
Apart from the tubing, you will need other components such as the end caps, elbows and brackets. The end caps are used to cover both ends of the tube to make it attractive. Various designs are available.
If you're going to install your brass tubing foot rails that will include a corner, an elbow is necessary. This is the part which will connect your tubing at the corner.
The brackets, meanwhile, serve as the main support. They will hold the tubing and keep it secure. During the installation process, the brackets are attached first. One end of these brackets is attached to the bar while the other end is attached to the floor with the use of screws. Ideally, they are positioned at least four feet or not more than five feet apart to keep it sturdy.
Once the brackets are in place, the brass tubing can now be inserted. After that, the end caps can be inserted to complete the installation.
Later on, you may also want to consider adding hand rails using the same brass tubing to your bar. With these fixtures, your bar will surely become fully functional and a great place to while away the time.

Homecare Medical Equipment Increases Bath Safety
As people get older, they become less steady on their feet. It is more difficult for them to take baths and showers, but it is also often a matter of pride at being able to do so when possible. For senior citizens and those who have had recent injuries or surgery, using a bath chair or shower stool is a safer way to bathe. When mobility is limited, other accessories can be installed or added to the patient's bathroom to limit the risks of falling. These specially designed devices can be purchased from online homecare medical equipment suppliers. When the patient is unsure of what type to buy or what would be most beneficial, it is best to consult their healthcare provider. They should use items specially made for the bathroom, shower or bathtub. Home medical equipment that is exposed to water will not rust or deteriorate.
Shower Chair
There are a variety of shower chairs on the market. They allow the user to sit down comfortably while bathing. This is especially helpful for people that rely on walkers, canes and crutches to get around. Different styles work for different patients. For example, the stool has no arms and fits places a regular shower chair will not, while chairs with arms are more helpful for those needing extra support getting in and out. The arms may get in the way of bathing, depending on a person's size and abilities. A bench is longer than a stool and makes more room for propping up feet for cleaning and rinsing or for shaving the legs. Shower chairs should be equipped with nonskid tips on the bottom of the legs to prevent movement and marring the tub or shower surface. Some models have leveling feet to prevent tipping.
Bathtub Rails & Grab Bars
Having something to grasp when climbing in and out of the bathtub helps prevent slipping and injuries. Use different styles of rails with one level or two. They may be long, fitting over the edge of the tub, or may be installed in the side of the wall, shower or tub to help steady the person as they maneuver to the bathing area. These home medical products often come in stainless steel or in a specially treated bar coated in white. Both are effective, and are a matter of personal taste and how well they blend with bathroom decor.
Bath Accessories
One of the most popular bath accessories in home medical supplies is the hand-held shower head. It enables the user to maneuver the water over them, rather than trying to move underneath the water. For people with mobility difficulties, this makes bathing much easier and safer. A variety of bath mats and shower mats offer features such as a thermal spa or slip-and-fall prevention.

Baby Furniture - How to Keep Baby Safe
Cribs are involved in more infant deaths each year than any other nursery product. Know what to look for when buying a crib.
First check the corner posts on the crib. The best option is corner posts that are flush with the headboard and footboard. At most, they should extent 1/16" above the top. They should not be long enough for clothing worn to get hooked on.
Check that the mattress support hangers can be completely secured to the frame by either bolts or closed hooks. Regularly check the crib's hardware to make sure none of it has loosened something that can happen with a child bouncing on the mattress.
If you'll be using bumper pads, check them out carefully to have the following features: tie or snap in place, fit all the way around the crib, have straps/ties in each corner, in the middle of the sides along the open rails and should also have ties at the top and bottom edges. (Be sure to remove the bumper pads when your child can stand in the crib. Otherwise they might use the pad as something to step on if they want to climb out of the crib.)
Once you get the crib and mattress home, discard all plastic. Never use any part of the plastic, including the bag covering the mattress, as the plastic could cause suffocation.
Because of the potential of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), use a firm, flat mattress in the crib and lay your baby on their back. Instead of using a blanket that can get wrapped around the baby, use a one-piece sleeper with legs and arms.
When arranging the baby furniture in the nursery, keep the crib away from any window. Any windows that have blinds or draperies also have cords that could cause strangulation. And the screen of an open window is not strong enough to prevent a child from falling out.
If you put your baby to bed with a pacifier or teether, never tie it around their neck. When you are ready to put your baby down to sleep, there should be nothing around their neck and that includes bibs and necklaces.
Make sure the side rail is fully locked when raised. Put the mattress in its lowest position once your child can stand in the crib by itself. Remove any and everything that they could possibly stand on to try and climb out including any stuffed animals or toys.
Climbing out anyway? Then keep the side rail down. It's a lot less further to fall than if the side rail is up.
And finally, keep in mind that any baby toy/mobile/gym that stretches across the crib is wonderful for your infant but can become a strangulation hazard once your baby gets older and more active.

Ways to Keep Your Bathroom Tidy
Smaller bathroom fixings such as towel rails and shelving can help to keep you bathroom tidy, but sometimes there are items that you just don't want to put out on show. There are a few bathroom furniture items that you can introduce in order to have these person items out of vie from friends and guests.
Regardless of how small a bathroom is, there is always wasted space that can be used to better organize all those products such as makeup, face wash and personal hygiene items. The most common wasted space is below the bathroom sink. This area is perfect for a vanity unit or even a small free standing cupboard. Vanities can be quite costly, but they can hold quite a bit of storage space. If you buy the right vanity that fits in with the current bathroom decor, you can end up enhancing the room and even increasing the value of your home.
Bathroom vanities normally come with two shelves and most often than not, they won't come with a drawer. The reason for this is because the pipes under the sink would make it difficult to have a drawer. There is sufficient space not only for your own person items, but also towel and linen. If you battle for cupboard space in the bedroom or spare room, you can move out the clean linen or towels and store them in the vanity unit instead. The bottom shelf can also be used to store bathroom cleaning products used to clean the bath, sink and floor.
When buying a vanity, make sure that the materials are durable and that they have been treated to withstand the high moisture and humidity content. Some people make the mistake of buying furniture that is made for the bedroom and fitting them into the bathroom. Untreated furniture will not last as long in the bathroom.

Guide to Lionel Model Trains Track Cleaning
Cleaning your Lionel model trains railroad tracks is a task that should be conducted when the tracks are noticeably dirty or when the train seems to stick and pause during operation. There are several methods that work well and you may want to experiment to find the one that suits you the best. The more you use your model trains, the less often you will need to clean the tracks. Conversely, with seldom used tracks, you may find you need to perform heavier-duty cleaning almost every time you use your toy model trains.
For HO scale trains, you can purchase a track-cleaning car. You fill the car with light oil and the track-cleaning car is pulled around the track by the engine. Be careful that you don't overfill the track cleaning car, for in doing so, oil may spill over onto the tracks or the scenery. Add oil sparingly to avoid the mess. The cars contain a small tank with protrusions that rub on the rails, cleaning the rails as the train travels the length of the track. The track-cleaning car can be used frequently. If you use a brass track, you may notice oxidation forming. If so, a more thorough cleaning of the track may be necessary.
For heavy-duty cleaning and eliminating oxidation from brass tracks, you will need a product such as Walther's Bright Boy. It is a hand-held cleaner that looks like a small flat eraser, measuring about 2" x 1.5". You rub the bar across the rails, allowing the grit to remove dirt, paint, and oil from your model tracks. If you have brass tracks for your toy model, this cleaner will remove most of the oxidation from the tracks. Using sandpaper or emery is not recommended as these products could leave pits in the tracks of your toy model trains.
Once you have cleaned the tracks with the bar, you will want to rub a soft cloth along the tracks to remove any residue left behind from the cleaner. Cleaning your tracks regularly will keep the toy trains running smoothly, giving you more time to enjoy playing and less time cleaning.
One more cleaning option is to use a liquid product that is made for track cleaning. LifeLike is one such product and can be purchased at your local hobby store. Dampen a soft cloth with the liquid and rub the tracks. Keep changing places on the cloth as you go so you are not using the same spot repeatedly. Dry the train tracks as you go. As you are cleaning, inspect your track for signs of damage and repair or replace them as needed.
Once your model trains tracks are clean, you will need to perform regular maintenance to keep them that way. A product such as Pacer Technology's Rail Zip is a good cleaner to maintain your track's cleanliness. You squeeze a drop or two on the track in a few places and let your toy model trains run for several minutes. This allows the product to be spread fairly evenly around the track. Additionally, this product will keep the wheels clean. Rail Zip will also restore the electrical conductivity by preventing and reducing sparking.
