Setting Up Your Under Bar - Essential Bar Supplies You May Have Overlooked

When setting up a bar, people often think of the front of the house and the visible part of the back bar. These are the areas of your establishment that people can see, the areas that can define your atmosphere and your clientele. So, they must be the key to driving sales, right? Not necessarily! Even in the "hottest" establishment, people ultimately want quality service. While hiring quality bartenders is part of the equation, it is your responsibility to make their jobs as easy as possible. This means that you need to carefully choose the right bar supplies for the space under your bar. An under bar with the proper set up will result in fast service and happy customers. A poorly set up under bar can mean a decrease in your sales.

Storage Cabinets
A storage cabinet with a drainboard top can be a great investment in any bar. If you put one next to your bar sink, your bartender can put glasses they've just washed into the storage cabinets. The drainboards allows these glasses to drip dry, giving you easy access to glasses during busy times.

If you find yourself pressed for space, a storage cabinet with a sink top can replace a compartment sink, giving you considerably more room in your back bar.

Cocktail Units and Workstations
For any bar that serves cocktails, having a cocktail unit or a workstation is an absolute must. If your establishment is fairly small, you should go with a cocktail unit because they will conserve more space than a workstation. However, if you have a little more room, workstations are probably the way to go since they have drain boards and blender stations built in. Both of these units have center compartments and side rails. The compartments are very handy for holding ice, and the side rails can be used for holding mixers. You may want to look for models that are built for a speed rail to fit across the front of the unit.

Speed Rails
If your establishment serves a variety of liquor, speed rails are essential bar supplies. They are designed to give the bartender easy access to the liquor bottles that are the most popular in your bar. Speed rails are indispensable if you want your bartenders to provide fast, efficient service, particularly during busy times.

Blender Stations
If your bar serves frozen cocktails, you have to have a blender. A blender station makes it easier to organize your frozen drink supplies. The stations are big enough to contain your commercial blender, any specialty glasses you want serve cocktails in, mixer bottles, and liquor bottles. With everything in one place, your bartender will have an easier time mixing up your signature frozen cocktails. Many blender stations also are equipped with a dump sink, which can also save time.

Direct Draw Beer Dispensers
If you serve any beer on tap, as many establishments do, direct draw beer dispensers are a necessity for your under bar. They go underneath the bar, so that the refrigerated keg is hidden and the name of the beer is displayed for your customers. If you serve large quantities of certain beers, it is definitely worth serving it on tap. It is actually less expensive than bottled beer, and customers prefer the taste.

Glass washers
In a busy bar, it is often impractical to go through the entire night without washing any of your glassware. By putting a glass washer underneath you bar, you can wash your glasses several times over the course of the night, ensuring that you always have enough clean glasses.

Ruby On Rails Outsourcing

Quintessential extracts of Open source Technology ......Do not roll up your sleeves before having sound knowledge about OOPs (Object Oriented Programming Language). Ruby on Rails is a proven tool and architecture for the fastest growing business solutions and investors are scaling up in developing nations with low cost resources, minimal investment and maximum throughput.

Ruby is an object oriented programming language that makes programming easy and interesting. It is amalgamation of Smalltalk's concept, Python's ease of use and learning concepts, Perl's pragmatism. Ruby on rails, RoR, Rails all these terms are used interchangeably. Rails has revolutionized the web with its sagacity and provided programmers with tools to meliorate by effacing long coding techniques and augmenting ruby programming.

Rails is a full-stack, free, web application, open source ruby web framework for developing database-backed web applications according to the Model-View-Control pattern that is optimized for sustainable productivity. From the Ajax in the view, to the request and response in the controller, to the domain model wrapping the database, Rails gives you a pure-Ruby development environment. To go live, all you need to add is a database and a web server. RoR uses Ruby programming language and Model view programming paradigm (multi-paradigm).

It follows principle of least surprise (POLS) and has lowered the barrier in entry to programming. Rails provides scaffolding programming (software application is built that is well supported by database and programmer has the flexibility to write about application database using model view controller framework) which helps to quickly and easily construct model views. Its effects are not confined to rails community but have also affected other communities globally.

Why Rails?? Every developer wants to speed up the development process at the same reducing error occurrence. Rails provide fast and easy development with quality results. If quality is retained but the speed is increased multifold you don't need to think over it but just go for it, here comes RoR. With Ruby programming language you need to write few lines of code in comparison to other programming language to reach the same result. 'Convention over configuration' is the RoR mantra i.e. with less software usage or consumption you generate more codes efficiently. The aim is to speed up development of web applications and database driven websites by providing programming convention and eliminating verbose xml configuration files.

System Requirement - Ruby and Rail Framework software; Database (e.g. MySQL, Oracle, DB2, SQL Server GUI client for Windows OS, differ for Linux, Macintosh); Joyent is the official RoR host; Web Server - Apache is most common

Ruby on Rails CMS is also becoming popular these days admin section can be focused to target design sites, it is easy to define new page elements - RSS, Atom, Tag clouds, overlay, file management, API are very common features. RoR CMS provides very flexible solutions, final output depends on user choice no pre-format is mandatory, image cropping, resizing, multi-language support, excellent usability, sort able tree-based admin interface, layout editor, scaffold template is created. Rails applications are Tailor made to perfection for an individual or an enterprise and best fit for all kind of web application. Rails architecture is used and most preferred for development of cms, e-commerce, portals, collaboration, and community.

Let's obliterate local boundaries and create world community by congregating Rails and other communities with smearing RoR, escalated web development solutions. Offshore outsourcing business model has helped SMEs to keep pace in spirit of the IT advancement and day to day competition. Growing online communities are stronger driving workforce as they get going by sharing their knowledge and are most privilege to be a contributing member of the community and share a common direction; they are traveling on the thrust of each other.

With India as an offshore development centre RoR development companies are mushrooming and the rise of regional blogs, social networking websites has created a common linking hub for everyone. Standing on the front wave of ubiquitous connectivity, I can say that RoR will dominate the web application development web world with its killer instinct. Indian Rails developers are harnessing existing and emerging opportunities and creating vast investment potentials for Indians to walk hand in hand with giant players. With landing of Indian Economy and globalization more offshore and big companies are setting up their development centers in India and outsource their software development, ruby on rails development to India. Outsourcing has become indispensable part of offshoring trades.

How the Independent Rear Suspension Made the Corvette Better

In 1953 Chevrolet shocked the world with what would ultimately prove to be a powerhouse in sports cars when they came out with the Corvette. As basic as the Corvette stared out as it has evolved into one of the top performing sports cars in the world bar none. One of the most significant developments for the Corvette came in the first year of the C2 generation of the Vette when in 1963 the all new Corvette Sting Ray featured an independent rear suspension for the first time in Vette history. Now the standard, it seems odd to think of a Corvette without the best of the best in handling and performance parts.

The independent rear suspension that was created for the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray was designed by Corvette legend Zora Arkus-Duntov. Duntov's design was both effective and simple and basically was a differential that was frame mounted with half shafts that were u-jointed and were all tied together by a leaf spring that was transverse. This unique design was inspired from the CERV I concept and was brought to life brilliantly. The struts were rubber cushioned and carried the differential, which allowed the all new Sting Ray to improve tire contact and reduce the harshness of the ride. This worked especially well on rougher roads. The transverse leaf spring found its home on the differential case as it was there that it was bolted on.

From there a control arm was slightly extended forward and laterally from both sides of the case and connected to a hub carrier that had a radius rod trailing behind it. The half shafts were meant to function in the same fashion as control arms do with the vertical motion being dealt with by the lower 'arms' and the fore motion being handled by the trailing rods. When coupled with improved shocks for the time period what was eventually found with the new independent rear suspension was the best handling Corvette to date and something for the engineering minds at GM to wrap their brains around and continue to develop. Because the handling improved so much with the new suspension the engineers at GM were able to do what they seem to do best with the Corvette and explore different ways to make the Vette more powerful.

Just the fact that the new suspension was lighter than the previous generation's meant that the new Corvette would be able to move in a more nimble fashion and also be able to brake easier as it didn't weigh so much. This was important as the four wheel disc braking system that the Corvette would eventually adopt as standard didn't appear on the Corvette until the 1965 model year. Today's Corvettes have suspensions that are taken almost directly from the race track, but it all started as a work in progress and an evolutionary procedure beginning with the independent rear suspension. As the Vette's of today handle like they are on rails, the Corvette Nation has the great minds of GM's past such as Duntov to thank for the modern marvel of handing that is known today.

What You Get From Bar and Foot Rail Kits

When it comes to home improvement projects, homeowners differ in the way they want to do things. Some want to leave construction work to the contractors and architects while some prefer to do the work on their own. Those who want to engage in do-it-yourself or DIY projects are normally the meticulous and creative people. They are particular about achieving their own style and following the right measurements that they would rather do the work themselves.

Today, though, home renovation works are not that hard to do what with the availability of easy to use kits. For constructing bars in one's house, for instance, there are now bar and foot rail kits. These can be bought from hardware and home improvement shops. Or they can be conveniently bought from online retail stores that exclusively offer railings and other accessories.

So what's in the bar and foot rail kits? These do-it-yourself kits are very handy and allow for an easy installation process. They contain everything you need to install any length of rail you require for up to 20 inches. Other items included are the brackets that support and stabilize the rail, flush end caps for a clean look, internal splices used for joining rail segments, screws and other hardware plus a complete installation guide. Depending on the retailer you choose, the well established ones can provide high quality kits containing durable railings and their accessories that can last for many long years.

As they are called kits, these items already come in a package particularly in a box to make it easy for buyers to store them and bring them from the store to their homes. Usually, these kits are packaged right at the jobsite to ensure they're well protected while on transit to the retailers and eventually to the customers.

Home bars are a great addition to any type of home. They can serve as an entertainment area especially for people who love to invite friends over for cocktails and parties on special occasions. These bars, however, can still look more attractive and become more functional when added with hand and foot rails.

Foot rails, for instance, provide a resting area for the feet. People can use it while sitting on the bar chair or even while standing and conversing with friends. With this comfort zone, the feet have little chance of getting tired thereby letting the person enjoy the company of friends and their favorite drinks.

If you're planning to put up a bar of whatever size you want in your home, you can opt to purchase the bar and foot rail kits. You can order for a specific length you want and they'll be delivered right at your doorstep. You may also specify the material you like depending on what's available at the shop from where you would like to buy your kit.

Make sure to read the instructions carefully and follow them to the letter to install your rails in the proper way. Proper installation means you are assured of a beautiful bar in your home.

Storing Towels in Your Bathroom

Bathroom towel racks are one of the most commonly used means of adding extra storage space to a bathroom. They are relatively simple to install, and can help to keep your bathroom looking tidy and stylish.

The most basic racks come in two different designs. The first is not actually a rack, but rather a single horizontal shelf that can be used to store folded towels. However because it is a shelf, it does not offer the ability to hang towels. For that, you need a railed towel rack.

Railed towel racks are similar to towel shelves, but because they contain rails they can be used to hang towels vertically as well as store them horizontally.

More expensive designs tend to have an arrangement of two or more railed shelves, in addition to an under hanging rail bar or set of hooks. These provide extra storage space, as well as hanging space, and are therefore far more functional that shelves or single railed racks.

Although these are physically larger than the other alternatives, their extra functionality tends to make them the preferred option for homeowners.

Installing A Towel Rack In Your Bathroom

Towel racks require a bit more skill to install than regular towel hooks, although the basic principle remains the same. You must first decide where on the wall you would like to install your rack, making sure there is enough clearance space around the rack.

If you are installing a railed rack, you also need to ensure that there is enough vertical space for your hanging towels. This can easily be done by holding a towel at the location you are thinking of installing your rack, and making sure that it does not touch the floor and is a reasonable distance away from it.

After deciding on your location it is important to scan that area with a metal detector to check for electrical wiring or pipes in the wall. Once you are certain there is nothing there, place your rack on the wall using a spirit level to ensure it is completely level. You can then screw in your rack into the wall.

Depending on the size of your rack, you may have to use wall plugs in addition to the screws. These will provide extra grip to the screws, and prevent the rack from ripping them out the wall under heavy loads.

This whole process shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes, after which you will have added some valuable storage space to your bathroom!

Decorating in Small Spaces

No matter how beautiful a room appears, it is not appropriately designed if it isn't completely functional. Kitchens and bathrooms are often the smallest rooms in the home, and yet are the most used. Because you actually live in these small spaces and don't just look at them, it is important to maximize every square inch. There are several things to consider to successfully remodel a small space into a dream space.

Small Furnishings For Small Spaces

Furnishings often take up the majority of room in any space, and this is especially true for small spaces. Each room has specific pieces of furniture that are basically requirements. Since you can't do without the furnishings, you need to choice the furnishings carefully. Often this simply means finding a scaled down version of each piece, but there are other space-saving qualities that should be considered. Many pieces of furniture can accomplish more than one function within the same piece. Some furnishings have moveable or removable parts to optimize the space they require when not in use. Also, furnishing may be designed to attach directly to a wall or other surface in the room eliminating the need for dead space around the furniture.

Think Function When Designing For A Small Space

Ultimately any room in the home is only good if it functions for your needs. Before designing a small space, take the time to discover what you actually want out of the room. You may find that there are items or areas previously in the room that were rarely used and can be eliminated. Conversely, you may discover that the way the room was previously designed did not provide all the function you wanted it to and those things should be a priority when designing the new room. Think carefully about what you will actually want to do in the small space to ensure those needs are met before adding other details that are not absolutely necessary.

Research Items Specifically Designed To Work In Small Spaces

Many companies now specialize in items intended for use in small spaces. It is well known in the interior design business that many homes, especially older homes, were not originally designed to function the way they are actually used by the home owner. In the not too distant past, rooms, particularly bathrooms and kitchens, were designed to be extremely utilitarian. They were created as rooms you go in, complete a task and quickly get out. Modern homes often use kitchens as gathering areas and bathrooms as sanctuaries even though there original design did not take that into consideration. Researching companies and products that take this into account in their design can help you to easily increase and improve the role of a small space.

Remodeling a small space can be a very rewarding experience. Optimizing the space to meet your individual needs and desires can completely change how you feel about the room. A room that was once a nightmare to work or live in can quickly become your new favorite room!

Make Your Bathroom Look New And Swanky - On A Shoestring Budget

When it comes to a relaxing time, few things can compare to a hot, refreshing shower at the end of a long and tiring day at work. But if you are like most people, you would definitely want to give your bathroom a new look, but just cannot spare the time or perhaps the money to get it done ...

If so, the good news is that you do not necessarily need to invest a lot of time or money in giving your bathroom a facelift - you could do that with relatively little effort, time and on a shoestring budget. A few changes here, a few changes there, some imagination and creativity might be what may be needed to get the work done. Here are a few ideas ...

. Has your shower curtain been around for a while ? If so, you might want to start by getting a brand new shower curtain - one of a totally different color that is not already present to any appreciable extent in your bathroom already.

. Do away with all the old soap dishes, napkins, toothbrush holders, lotion dispensers and the like. Get new ones that look distinct and possibly have multiple functions. Creative new designs always seem to be available on the market and you might want to see if any of them catch your fancy.

. See what looks old and worn out in your bathroom. Replace them with colorful new accessories. That should do a great deal of good when it comes to improving how your bathroom looks and feels.

. See if you can work some colorful contrasts into your bathroom. Hang some colorful and soft napkins. And some nice looking pictures - ones that would put you into a pleasant state of mind.

. Clean up your bathroom. This you might want to do before you start anything else. Bathrooms that look sterile and clean look good.

. Try changing the air freshener. If you have been using the same kind of air freshener for a while, then you might want to replace it with something else you like.

And here is one tip that could make you bathroom look a lot, lot different and more spacious too

Add more mirrors, if you can. Adding a few full length mirrors to the walls of your bathroom can make it look and feel a lot more spacious and inviting. This is especially true for smaller bathrooms. But adding mirrors is possibly the easy part - they have to be kept clean all the time and this would mean quite a bit of effort.

You could give your bathroom a brand new and more inviting look with a bit of creativity. But keeping it that way does require time and effort.

Riding the Rails - Chicago Bound (A Short Story)

Chick Evens and Tom Fortuna, stood still looked about the railroad yard.

"It's all right," Tom said.

"You mean the lousy brakeman's gone-right," Chick asked Tom.

"He's nowhere insight," remarked Tom.

Evens wiped his hands on his trousers, getting the dirt off of them, he looked down the tracks a-ways, could still see the lights of the caboose, it had left the Jackson Street Railroad Yard, had slowed down a mile away at the Mississippi Railroad Yard (where they were at now, near their homes), but was going in the opposite direction he and Tom wanted to go, wanted to catch a ride from St. Paul, to Chicago. They were both fifteen-years old, it was a Friday night, they figured they'd jump the train as it slowed down, and be in Chicago by morning, have breakfast and if their luck held out, be back in St. Paul by noon the next day for lunch.

The train was coming, he could feel the distinct power in its movement of the ground, unlike anything else, it woke him up-vibrated through his feet to his stomach and arms and throat and jaw and teeth, startled his inners, the sound was so loud and powerful, he could feel, if not sense, and was convinced the train would soon bear down upon him.

Chick touched the stepladder attached onto the freight car that ran parallel to him, as he ran and allowed the pull of the train to automatically lift and pull his body over and up onto its steel ladder-next to it, then he'd hang on with one hand, pull the rest of his body up and to the ladder bars, as Tom would do the same, was doing the same, and Chick noticed underneath the boxcar was a hobo or bum (a hobo being a traveling worker, and a bum being a bum), and in-between two boxcars (the one he was hanging onto, and the one Tom was hanging onto, next to his) was another vagrant; both he and Tom, hanging onto the side ladders, attached to the freight cars. He could hardly see them, but they were there, moving shadows nonetheless, and with the moon being their lamp, he could see their outlines.

The gravel and packed sand along side the tracks, extended beyond the rim of the steel tracks, and solid wooden row of timbers. In part He was about to do what the hobos were doing, riding the rods, that required skill and lots of courage, and it required a man to position himself under the freight car, hanging onto a rod, as Jack Dempsey did when he was sixteen, Evens at fifteen, but not to the extend Jack did. In those far-off days, folks had to go long distances to find work; this was an adventure trip, nothing more. Therefore, he simply, grabbed with one hand, and jumped with one foot landing on that ladder I mentioned, at the end of one freight car, and there he was. The metal ladder went to the roof of the car, he remained on its first step, held with two hands the third bar to the ladder, gripped the iron like bar in front of him with no breathing space between bar and fingers.

Chick was not what was called 'a teenage-freight rider, riding the rails' as many teenagers did during the depression years in the 1920s and 30s, on a regular bases, but from his perspective, and Tom's, it was presumed simply, and attempted at simply, for its romanticism of the road, and in time, Chick Evens would travel the roads throughout the whole United States by car, trains and planes, then crisscross the world by planes. But today, for now, this evening, at this very moment, it was his first ride on a freight train, and his first, attempt at riding the rails, as they say; call it the spirit of adventure.

The boxcars started to speed up; there was acceleration, a rush inside of Chick, along with the trains forward thrust. Likewise, Tom was hanging on tight, heart-wrenching: it was a free ride, open air, exhilarating, and Evens tried to get another look at the traveler underneath the freight car on the car's structural rods he got a glimpse of his hand hanging beyond the boxcar, and his elbow, his smudged and muddy boots, then he saw another man climbing a ladder beyond Tom's boxcar, looking like he was going to ride the deck (on top of the railroad car), unless it was a guard. He thought maybe he should have tried an empty gondola car, that is, an unoccupied caboose, but that would have been too dangerous, once in it you'd not be able to escape easily, if someone put a spike in the door, and most of them were closed anyhow, so this was for the most part, safer, yet one needed to be mindful of the risk.

Four miles outside of St. Paul, the train started to slow down; Chick could see and feel the slower movement of the train. What he was hoping was there'd be no swaying trains, coming the opposite way, it could sweep him off the train into it, the one riding the rods were safer, they were confined in a smaller space, less detectable than he, who had to hang exposed, and hang on for dear life; whereas, those under him could roll out and off the train when he wanted to with no difficulty or move back farther in, plus he got only a little dust and cinders on him, whereas Evens got them all, even got dirt thrown in his face, and that got a little fearful for him, and the monotonous sound of the wheels, could lull a man to sleep, on the rails, and falling to sleep, meant falling to your death. Although one needed to be careful if he road the rods, because at road crossings, one could get their cloths caught in planks, and be pulled under the train itself, and cut in two. For some this kind of life, was a lifestyle, for Chick Evens, as already pointed out, it was an adventure, no more, and one that appeared to be ending sooner than expected.

Another three miles and then the train came to a dead stop. They were in some railroad yard, a junction, there was a highway to the left of them, and lights, from a restaurant, a gas station and a bar lit up the area he was in.

Chick stepped down off the ladder backwards, it was easier to pull his self off and then be facing forward in a comfortable option to take a second step, to catch oneself, and not get hurt. The same way he got onto the ladder, achieving solid footing. Then he looked straight ahead, the sign read: "New Port," and he said to Tom: "Well, exactly where are we?"

(A man yelled from the top of the roof, 'You kids get the hell out of here before...!")

"Let's get going," said Tom.

"Where is New Port?" Chick asked Tom.

Tom a little embarrassed, remarked, "Seven miles from where we started out from, my older sister lives out here with her husband. And there isn't any more trains going to Chicago, and only one leaving here at 2:00 a.m., to go back to the Jackson Street Yards, only slowing down at the Mississippi Yards." (Tom had watched trains pretty much, knew about them, but as far as Chick was concerned: the blind was following the blind.)

"So now we got to walk seven miles back home, is that right Tom?" asked Evens, as if he didn't know, nor needed any confirmation, but out of anger. Tom looked at Evens, smiled, Evens' face was unhappy, said in a blunt way, "And we are only 393 miles from Chicago."

Tom looked at his watch, "its 11:20 p.m., we should get back in a few hours if we keep a good stride." He commented.

He looked at Tom, "Let's sit down over by the embankment, rest, get our wind, and then head on back."

And there they sat, blank like, looking off into emptiness, to nowhere, discouraged, but Evens came to the point after a minute or two of meditation: he got his ride, learned a few things along the way, and for now that would just have to do, it would have to be good enough, like it or not, and his composure showed it was-under the circumstances- showed that it was kosher.

"Let's go Tom," said Chick.

"Sure," said Tom, droopy faced, not looking forward to the seven mile walk back along the tracks, "What's the matter?" Asked Tom.

"I'm alright, just thinking it will be about 3:00 a.m., by the time we get back."

"I don't know, but that sounds about right," said Tom.

"Come on; let's get going then, no time to waste."

It was 2:45 a.m., when Evens walked through the door of his home, everyone sleeping, and he went directly to the bathroom, which meant he had to go halfway into his mother's bedroom, "Who's that?" she said.

"Just me, Chick mom, went to the bathroom?"

"Oh, when did you get...?" and before she could finished her statement-question, and before Evens had to lie, she fell back to sleep.

Home Owners DIY Guide to Block Paving your Drive

D-I-Y Block Paving Instructions

Like to try your hand at D-I-Y? This comprehensive instruction sheet will help you to block pave your drive or paths or patio. Although, with less weight and stress on paths or patios, you are not limited to the Herringbone style of laying the blocks, as with driveways, you are.

Most of the tooling can be rented from the local tool hire shop. Most of these businesses allow you to rent a tool from one day or how many days you will need the tool. For this job, most people will definitely need to hire a plate vibrator. (Unless its on your Christmas wish list of course!)

Tools Required:

Plate Vibrator

Block Cutter

Type1 Sub Base material

Drainage Channels

Washed Sharp Sand

Shovels , Broom, Gloves

The selection of paving, blocks and edgings are for you to decide. Most local builders merchants will supply a range of these products. Or, specialist companies who manufacture clay or concrete castings usually have a brochure you can pick up and peruse.

Step 1 a. Mark out the area to be paved and remove all the topsoil or existing surfacing to a depth so that the finished level is at least 150mm below the damp proof course of any adjoining house or building. If the area is flat it will be necessary, for drainage purposes, to create a slight slope during the excavation, dropping 25mm over 1 metre across the width (1:40) and 25mm over 2 metres along the length (1:80).

b. Compact the excavated area with the plate vibrator, digging out any soft spots and filling them with sub-base material. c. Install surface water drainage channels if required, i.e. if the paved area slopes towards the house/building or any other place where water run-off would not be welcome. Recessed manhole covers should also be installed at this stage if required.

Note: Finished level of paving should be approx. 5mm above any drainage point.

Step 2 Install all edge restraints, whether kerbs or edgings, by setting firmly in concrete to correct levels.

Step 3 Lay the sub-base material within the edge restraints and compact it firmly with the plate vibrator; depending on how well it compacts, you may need to go over the whole area between 5 and 10 times. It is essential that this sub-base is firm and to the right level and if there are any voids, fill them with sharp sand.

Note: Also, at this stage, if you intend to use lighting in your driveway, lay down the electrical cable within a conduit sleeve in your sub base. You can work out where to leave the cable ends in relation to the lights. If you have no electrical knowledge, I suggest that you get a fully qualified electrician to install the electrics for the lighting. Ideally, the lighting should illuminate each side of the drive.

Step 4 Spread the sharp sand to a depth of 50mm, compact it with the plate vibrator and spread a further 15mm of sharp sand over the area as a loose screed. Correctly level the screed with a rigid piece of timber or screed bar drawn along guide rails.

Step 5 Lay one course of blocks on the sand along all the edge restraints. They may be laid long ways against the edge ('a stretcher course') or with the short side against the edge ('a header course') depending on personal preference.

Step 6 Lay the blocks hand tight only, with a joint gap of 2-5mm, starting in one corner and at the bottom if there is a slope.

Notes:

a. Randomly mix and lay blocks from at least 3 packs to ensure even distribution of colour and texture.

b. If laying in herringbone pattern pull a string line across the area at 90" or 45", as appropriate, and lay the blocks along the line. To start a herringbone pattern either put stretcher blocks along the line with one corner against the edge restraint and fill in the voids later with cut blocks, or use Bishop's Hats, which sit flush against the edge restraint and give you the angle to work from.

c. Pieces smaller than one quarter of a block should be avoided where possible.

Step 7 Sweep the area thoroughly after it has been laid - particularly if a block cutter has been used - to remove all chips and fragments. Then check to ensure there are no damaged blocks; if there are any, this is the time to replace them.

Step 8 Compact the whole area with two or three passes of the plate vibrator.

Step 9 Sweep jointing Sand over the entire area, ensuring it gets right into all the joints between the blocks.

Notes;

a. Jointing Sand should not be applied in wet weather as wet sand will not fill the joints properly and could stain the surface of the blocks.

b. If there is a recessed manhole cover, care should be taken to avoid any sand getting in between the cover and the frame.

Step 10 Vibrate the whole area again to force down the Jointing Sand and fill any gaps which appear in the joints. Leave any surplus sand on the surface for the wind/rain to wash into joints. Alternatively sweep off the surface and re-sand if necessary.

We hope this DIY Paving project and general groundworking advice helps you to achieve the driveway you want. We have more information about this subject online, with pictures.
